Electric vs. Plug-in Hybrid
In addition to hybrid vehicles and fully electric cars, there is a third breed of new electric vehicle technology: The Plug-in Hybrid.
What is the difference between a fully electric car, a standard hybrid and a plug-in hybrid? Like hybrid cars, plug-in hybrids have both electric and gas motor. The major difference is that on a plug-in hybrid, the gas motor is held in reserve in case your battery runs out of charge. In other respects, a plug-in hybrid functions more like a fully electric car, in that it primarily relies on an electric motor, powered by a large battery that you plug in to charge.
Plug-in hybrid
- Primary propulsion: electric motor, supplementary gas motor
- Fuel: Electric battery, backup gas fuel tank available
- Range: Battery range + gas fuel tank
Electric Cars
- Primary propulsion: electric motor
- Fuel: Electric battery
- Range: Battery range
Standard hybrid
- Primary propulsion: electric motor, supplementary electric motor
- Fuel: Gas, supplementary passive-charging battery
- Range: Gas fuel tank range
WHAT IS AN ELECTRIC CAR?

Electric vehicle technology has rapidly progressed over recent years, with new and previously inconceivable innovations helping drive this new way to view transportation in a modern world. With quantum leaps in electric motor and battery cell high-tech mechanics, automotive OEMs across the globe are racing to switch their model line focus to specialize in electricity as opposed to gasoline combustion.
While there is still much work to be done in the means of battery car charging station networks to support this wave of new vehicles, the path to this very near future of automotive is quickly taking shape. According to a 2021 Consumers Reports article, over 100 BEV (Battery Electric Vehicles) will be hitting the market in the next five years, giving drivers who want to embrace this technology a wide selection of experiences to choose from.
A key component to the success of any electric vehicle lies in its' battery capabilities. Liquid Lithium-Ion batteries are one such preferred battery tech that can be found in many electric vehicles. Lithium ions move from the negative electrode through an electrolyte to the positive electrode during discharge, and back the opposite way when charging. Li-on batteries utilize use an intercalated lithium compound as the material at the positive electrode and usually graphite at the negative electrode. Another emerging battery type used in some newer models are considered Solid-State, which use thin layers of solid electrolytes to pass lithium ions between negative and positive electrodes. With solid-state batteries being as much as eight times more expensive to produce, and hard to build at scale, these batteries will more likely be reserved for luxury electric vehicles.

2025 GMC Sierra EV Denali - The Electric Truck Redefined
The 2025 GMC Sierra EV Denali brings all-electric power to the full-size truck segment without asking drivers to sacrifice the capability they depend on. Available in two configurations - Denali Extended Range and Denali Max Range - the Sierra EV delivers serious performance numbers that put it among the most capable electric trucks on the road. The Extended Range model produces 645 horsepower and 785 lb-ft of torque, with an EPA-estimated range of up to 390 miles on a full charge and a towing capacity of up to 10,500 pounds. The Max Range model increases output to 760 horsepower in Max Power mode and offers up to 460 miles of GM-estimated range, making it one of the longest-range electric pickup trucks available today.
Acceleration is instantaneous and exhilarating - the Sierra EV reaches 60 mph in under 4.5 seconds. Charging is equally impressive: using an 800-volt DC Fast Charger at up to 350 kW, the Sierra EV can recover approximately 100 miles of range in just 10 minutes. For everyday charging at home, a Level 2 setup delivers a full charge overnight. The Sierra EV also features GMC's 4-Wheel Steer system with the exclusive CrabWalk capability, which allows the rear wheels to turn in the same direction as the front wheels - enabling diagonal movement to navigate tight off-road terrain or challenging job sites. Air Ride Adaptive Suspension raises or lowers the truck by approximately two inches at the touch of a button. The innovative MultiPro MidGate expands the usable bed to haul items nearly 11 feet long, and an 11-cubic-foot front eTrunk provides secure, weatherproof storage where the engine used to be. The cabin is anchored by a 16.8-inch touchscreen with Google Built-in, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and an available 7-speaker Bose Premium Sound System. The Sierra EV also features 7.2 kW AC Offboarding Power, allowing you to power equipment and tools directly from the truck - making it as useful on the job site as it is on the open road.
2025 GMC HUMMER EV Pickup - Power Beyond Imagination
The 2025 GMC HUMMER EV Pickup is in a class entirely its own. Available in 2X and 3X configurations, this all-electric supertruck delivers performance figures that were simply unthinkable from a production pickup just a few years ago. The 2X model features a dual-motor setup producing 570 horsepower and 7,400 lb-ft of torque. Step up to the 3X model and three electric motors combine to produce 830 horsepower - with an available 1,000 horsepower in certain modes - and up to 11,500 lb-ft of torque. With the Watts to Freedom launch control feature engaged, the 3X rockets from a standstill to 60 mph in a staggering 3.3 seconds. Towing capacity is rated at 7,500 pounds, and the 212.7 kWh double-stacked lithium-ion battery pack provides a manufacturer-estimated combined range of 329 miles.
The HUMMER EV Pickup is built to go anywhere. GMC's exclusive CrabWalk four-wheel steering technology allows all four wheels to point in the same direction, enabling the truck to move diagonally through tight trail obstacles. Extract Mode activates the adaptive air suspension to raise the vehicle by up to six inches, delivering up to 15.9 inches of ground clearance for fording water or clearing rugged terrain. An available Extreme Off-Road Package adds 35-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory mud terrain tires, front and rear electronically locking differentials, and a UltraVision underbody camera system with a wash system for total situational awareness on the trail. The available Infinity Roof features removable Sky Panels for an open-air driving experience, while a fully lined five-foot bed with optional GMC MultiPro Tailgate extends the usable bed floor to nearly seven feet. Eleven cubic feet of front eTrunk storage sits under a power-operated hood. Inside, a 13.4-inch touchscreen with Google Built-in governs infotainment and vehicle settings, and every 3X model comes with a complimentary three-year trial of Super Cruise - GMC's hands-free driver-assistance technology compatible with over 400,000 miles of roads across the U.S. and Canada.
2025 GMC HUMMER EV SUV - Off-Road Icon, Reimagined in Electric
The 2025 GMC HUMMER EV SUV shares its legendary powertrain with the Pickup but brings it to a shorter, more maneuverable body that amplifies off-road agility without compromising interior space or luxury. Available in 2X and 3X trims, the SUV offers 570 horsepower and 7,400 lb-ft of torque in the 2X and 830 horsepower with up to 11,500 lb-ft of torque in the 3X. EPA-estimated range runs from 312 to 315 miles depending on configuration and tire choice, and the 3X reaches 60 mph in just 3.5 seconds with the Watts to Freedom feature. Its shorter wheelbase gives the SUV a best-in-class breakover angle and impressive departure angle compared to the Pickup, allowing it to navigate technical off-road terrain with even greater ease. CrabWalk, Extract Mode, and the Adaptive Air Ride Suspension are all carried over from the Pickup, delivering the same extraordinary trail capability in a slightly more nimble package.
The HUMMER EV SUV's interior is unmistakably premium. The signature Infinity Roof with removable Sky Panels floods the cabin with natural light, while a standard 14-speaker Bose Surround Sound System delivers concert-quality audio on or off the trail. Heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, heated second-row seats, and a customizable digital gauge cluster round out a feature-rich interior designed for five passengers in total comfort. A Power Swing Gate provides convenient rear access, and a 13.4-inch touchscreen with Google Built-in connects you to navigation, entertainment, and vehicle management functions with ease.
Understanding the Difference: Battery Electric, Plug-in Hybrid, and Standard Hybrid
If you're exploring the world of electrified vehicles for the first time, it helps to understand the key distinctions between the three main types. A fully battery-electric vehicle (BEV) like the GMC Sierra EV and HUMMER EV runs exclusively on electric power. There is no gasoline engine - the vehicle is powered entirely by its battery, which you charge at home or at a public charging station. Range is determined solely by battery capacity. A plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) combines a battery-powered electric motor with a gasoline engine held in reserve. PHEVs can travel a meaningful distance on electricity alone and are then backed by the gas engine for longer trips - offering flexibility for drivers who aren't yet ready to go fully electric. A standard hybrid uses a gasoline engine as its primary source of power, supplemented by an electric motor that charges itself through regenerative braking. Unlike PHEVs and BEVs, standard hybrids cannot be plugged in - the battery charges automatically during driving. Each technology serves a different type of driver, and our team at Bergey's Buick GMC is here to help you determine which makes the most sense for your daily routine and driving habits.
Home Charging for Your GMC Electric Vehicle
One of the most practical advantages of owning an electric vehicle is the ability to charge at home overnight, so you start every day with a full battery. GMC recommends installing a Level 2 home charger (240-volt) for the fastest home charging experience. GMC's own PowerUP and GM Energy PowerShift home charging solutions are designed to integrate seamlessly with your vehicle, and the Sierra EV is even capable of acting as a home energy backup when paired with compatible GM Energy home storage components. For occasional top-offs or lower daily mileage, a standard 120-volt household outlet can also provide a slow but steady charge. Our team can walk you through the home charging options available for whichever GMC EV you choose.
